General Motors unveils EV van as part of new commercial business unit
General Motors said Tuesday it plans to launch an all-electric van called the EV600 this year. CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: cnb.cx/2NGeIvi
Shares of General Motors hit a record high in intraday trading Tuesday after the automaker unveiled a new electric van and revealed potential plans to delve into futuristic flying cars.
The Detroit automaker’s stock was up by as much as 8.8% to $48.95 a share as of Tuesday morning, leading to a roughly $70 billion market cap. Its previous high of $46.76 occurred in October 2017. It’s a record since the automaker emerged from bankruptcy during the Great Recession and went public in 2010.
GM CEO Mary Barra and other executives discussed the plans as part of the CES technology conference, which is being streamed online this year.
The EV600 electric van is scheduled to go on sale later this year through a new commercial business unit of GM’s called BrightDrop. The division is planning a full portfolio of electric products, not just vehicles, including a delivery pallet that was unveiled Tuesday.
The potential foray into “personal air mobility” was announced as part of Cadillac’s portfolio of luxury and EV vehicles. It included an autonomous shuttle and an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, or more commonly known as a flying car or air taxi.
Michael Simcoe, vice president of GM global design, said each concept reflected “the needs and wants of the passengers at a particular moment in time and GM’s vision of the future of transportation.”
“This is a special moment for General Motors as we reimagine the future of personal transportation for the next five years and beyond,” Simcoe said.
The flying vehicle is designed to hold one passenger and travel roughly 56 mph between rooftops and other urban destinations, according to the company. A GM spokeswoman confirmed GM has designed models of both autonomous concepts, but computer renderings were simulated during the presentation. She declined to provide other details.
Despite uncertainties around personal air mobility, Morgan Stanley expects the autonomous urban aircraft market may be worth $1.5 trillion by 2040.
The segment is attracting major investments from the automotive and aviation industries. Fiat Chrysler earlier Tuesday announced a new partnership with air mobility company Archer to help lower costs and accelerate the launch of an eVTOL aircraft. Other companies involved in the segment include Joby, Boeing-backed Wisk and Hyundai Motor.

GM's clearly serious about this EV future thing, remember when GM talked about an EV light-duty and mid-duty platform, I'm guessing this is the mid-duty setup, FedEx is the 1st, but clearly, others will follow, besides FedEx needed an answer to Amazon Rivian EV cargo van, it will be interesting to see the other mid duty EV models from GM, I'm curious to why create Brightdrop and not just roll this into GMC professional-grade slogan or something, Tesla is getting it from all sides, now

The design and engineering is progressing well, we have 3D rendering. Maybe we will see a prototype in 6 or 7 years.

GM is a marketing company, not a car company. All this electric talk and they have no scale. They’ll get there-- still waiting to see. That battery tech hopefully they can get the cost down with economies of scale, but I’m afraid it’s not going to be cheap enough in years, scalable ( mass produced ) and outdated in terms of energy density and design structure like cell to body over cell to pack ; which can have huge range increase. We’ll see, but not betting the house on GM; they continue to make gas cars for the decade.

Without investing in power generating like Nuclear to supply affordable and plenty energy and also if the Government incentives to buy EV's stop..............................the EV market don't have very strong legs to be dominant in the car market any time soon.

A large portion of GMs value is the dealership network. Anyone that thinks dealerships are great, have no soul. When GM layouts out a plan to produce over 1.5 terrawatt hours of Evs by 2030, then we can believe in their value. When Has a $10,000 software add on to their cars that has a 25% take rate, then maybe it can be worth what Tesla is. When GM has the technology to do their own insurance, make their own full self driving chip, have true over the air updates to their cars , produce their own solar products , oh and design their own battery with ground break uses of tabless construction , dry battery electrode and more ... let me know. Tesla is only getting started, and are about to prove exactly how far behind companies like GM are and it’s about 5 years. You don’t get it yet... but you will. Just like blackberry didn’t get the iPhone until it was too late. GM will be okay... GM is cannibalizing its ice business , not hurting Tesla in an EV market that isn’t even 10% of autos yet. Plenty of room for “ competition “. People will choose GM because it’s a marketing company, not a car company and it’s something familiar. Just like people held onto their blackberrys for years. But again...just watch, it’s only a matter of ... time

This is a massive move .. the Nikola no-deal, the new logo design, and the truck animation .. GM is moving all the needles .. one success story after the other.. so much great work from the marketing and design division. I'm sure the rest of the company will catch-up and maybe deliver something in the coming years ..unless the animations change ;-)
